Working as the elementary counselor at Stanberry R-II, I will be implementing the Missouri Model Guidance Program.  This program is preventative and remedial; therefore, your child will be directly affected by some of the services I offer.  These services could include guidance curriculum, small group counseling, and individual counseling.

While implementing the guidance curriculum, I will go into the classroom weekly for 25 minutes in grades K-6.  The competencies covered are found in a syllabus provided to each student.

Individual counseling will result from a referral from a teacher, parent, the student himself/herself, or another concerned adult.  Generally, a referral is made when a student is expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns, or normal developmental tasks.  These sessions will include only the student and myself and will be structured and goal oriented to meet the needs of the student.  Examples of topics are anger management, academic problems, problems with bullies, behavior problems, and family issues.  These sessions are normally held once a week for a 20-30 minute duration.  The number of sessions depends on how long it takes the student to reach the predetermined goal.

You do need to know that, ethically, anything said during a counseling session is confidential.  I cannot reveal what is said unless not revealing the information could bring real or potential danger to the safety or well-being of the student or another person, there is suspicion of child abuse or sexual abuse, or I reveal information to another professional who has more expertise in the area than myself.  Confidentiality allows the students to feel free to deal with their concerns and express their thoughts and feelings, without the fear of disclosure.

I am looking forward to working with your child and want to thank you in advance for your cooperation.  Together, with the help of the other school personnel, we can successfully help your child develop intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally to prepare them to lead productive lives and possess feelings of self-worth.

If you have any questions or wish to contact me for any other reason, you may reach me at school at 783-2141.  Please view my school web page for information about resources and services I offer through my guidance program.
